Red Lobster is getting into the "customize" meals game with their new Seaside Mix & Match. You can get two entrees or three for $12.99 or $17.99 respectively. Among the options are a few new items, one of which just sounds too good to be true - Cheddar Baked Biscuit Shrimp & Lobster Pot Pie. Pot pies can be really good and really bad, but this crustacean lover just about jumped overboard when he heard about this one:
My first impression of the white sauce was that is was kind of bland. I thought four or five times that I should add salt and pepper, but there was enough shrimp inside to keep me from seasoning. However, this was before I discovered the soaking biscuit flavor. If you break up the biscuit and let it soak in the sauce, no additional seasoning needed.
I was very pleased with the number of shrimp in the pie. There was almost a shrimp for every fork full I ate at first. Disappointingly (and as may be expected from a cost angle) was the amount of lobster. I had three pieces, two of which were readily visible, but one that looked like a half shrimp. The peas and carrots are a nice little additive to get that pot pie feel and rounded out the dish well.
Overall, this dish pretty much met my expectations. The biscuit delivers and there is a good sea food flavor (though mainly shrimp). For me, it was the best pot pie ever (but understand I do not like traditional crust). The only downsides were discovering the soaking biscuit flavor too late and the lack of lobster. I would love, no LOOOVE it if the biscuit was more of a pie that held in the filling, but I love the cheddar biscuits. If you like the cheddar biscuit and shrimp and lobster, do not miss this one!
