The new Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich is a member of Burger King's new summer offerings, which also includes the Rib Sandwich. I have been a fan of Burger King's new offerings as of late, offering some delicious twists on the whopper and sides, so my hopes were high with this one. However, they have had some flops like the Bacon Cheddar Stuffed Burger, so I was cautious as well and since this is a fast food burger joint trying to offer a sandwich made popular from the slow cooking process. So here it is:
One of the first things I noticed about the pork was how compact it was. Generally, the pork in a good pulled pork sandwich is loose and not connected. That is the point of "pulling" the pork. This however was a homogeneous serving, almost patty like. This made the pork softer and lacked that bit of crispness you get from barbecued meat. So I would say that this attribute alone keeps the sandwich from avoiding the label of "fast food quality". Beyond the texture problem, the sandwich was good. I have never had the privilege of eating real Memphis (from Memphis) BBQ sauce, but I enjoyed the flavor of this sauce. The BBQ sauce is a more mild sauce with a sweet touch to it, similar to Subway's smokehouse sauce. The smokey flavor is more evident than Subway's, though still muted for my taste.
The southern dressing is noticeable to the eye, though it blended with the BBQ sauce when eaten. The onion adds a nice, though not much, crunch and flavor to the sandwich. Overall, it was nice to see a sandwich like this on a fast food menu; however, it is fast food and won't compare to your local BBQ joint or the causal BBQ franchises. So this is a try if you are in the mood for something other than a burger or chicken at a fast food price.
You Might Like If: You like BBQ pork sandwiches and are fine with a little lower quality, you like the Subway Smokehouse BBQ sauce, or you like sweeter BBQ sauce.
You Might NOT like If: You love the traditional pulled pork texture (separated, crispy pork), you do not like soft meat sandwiches, or you do not like sweet BBQ sauce.
Our Suggestion: This is a try for all except the BBQ purist.
